Egg-citing Science Experiment

Mrs Hermitage’s Key Stage 3 Science Club continues to fascinate Kingsley’s budding scientists. They particularly enjoyed a recent experiment to demonstrate how a hard boiled egg can be pushed into a milk bottle by the air outside.

The girls carefully placed lit matches inside their milk bottles, causing the air inside to heat and expand, forcing some air from the bottle to escape. Hard boiled eggs were then placed on top of the bottle causing the air inside to contract. Pupils then stood back to see the egg pushed into the bottle by the greater pressure from the air outside. Although it appears as if the egg is sucked into the bottle, it is in fact pushed in by the air outside.

Well done to everyone who took part in successfully proving the theory. Special thanks to Mrs Duke who assisted, and to science technicians Mrs Lichfield and Mrs Jones, who boiled and peeled the many eggs needed for the experiment. EGGCELLENT!
