Motionhouse Dance Company, February 06 The week beginning 27 February was a most exciting one for Kingsley’s performing arts department, when the internationally acclaimed dance company Motionhouse came and worked with some of our dance students, as well as performing its latest work “Perfect” to the public.
The school hall was quickly transformed into a theatre with raised seating and an incredibly innovative set. Monday started with the rigging of the set and lighting system. The school already has a comprehensive lighting rig and sound system which Motionhouse was able to utilise to good effect. On Monday afternoon four of the dancers worked with our Year 9 girls and then with Year 10 GCSE dance students.
Tuesday was a complete workshop day for the Year 10 girls and they were given fantastic opportunities to create and devise their own work based on the choreographic ideas given to them.
They were also allowed on the set to try out some of the techniques that the dancers employ in the production - the first time that any students have been allowed to do this.
On Wednesday further rigging took place, while the dancers took a well-earned rest. The dancers then performed their exhilarating work three times in 24 hours, with a Thursday afternoon dress rehearsal before Years 4, 5 and 6 from our Junior School followed by a public performance in the evening; then on Friday afternoon local secondary school students joined our GCSE and A Level girls at a matinée performance.
The 75 minute performance was stunning and technically vibrant, leaving the audience breathless and full of admiration for the creativity behind the choreography and music. Clever use of lighting and projected images enhanced the incredibly physical piece of dance theatre which culminated in an athletic use of ropes.
We are delighted to have forged this new relationship with Motionhouse and plans are already in hand for next year. |
