Another busy year, with a record number of gold awards.

Seventeen girls will receive their gold certificates at Buckingham Palace during the winter of 2006 and spring of 2007. Another thirteen girls are near to completion and will attend their gold presentation ceremonies during the course of next year.
Thirty-six pupils in this year's Year 11 will gain their bronze awards next spring, along with ten silver awards.

The commitment shown by all girls is tremendous and we are particularly impressed by the wide range of voluntary activities in the service section, from fund raising for local charities, guide dogs for the blind, cancer research, diabetes UK, working in a paediatric department, caring for the elderly, riding for the disabled, to name but a few.

On completion of the skill, service, physical section and expedition training the finale is the expedition assessment. The bronze candidates spent three weekends in the Wye Valley in variable weather conditions but for the silvers and golds the routes and weather this year were extremely challenging. As ever the groups fought back, won the emotional battle and completed some of our most gruelling expeditions to date.

A few quotes from expedition reports:

Everyone supported each other when the idea of just sitting on the ground was much more inviting than walking up an extremely steep hill in the beating heat.

My map-reading, navigation, camping and social skills have all improved and I am much more self-reliant.

I managed to achieve something I never thought I could.

The D of E award is all about teamwork.

The expedition was fun despite the hard work. We called our heavy rucksacks purses to make us feel better!

I have discovered that I can be strong when emotions run high.

When the going gets tough, eat chocolate!

VERY WELL DONE TO ALL WHO TOOK UP THE CHALLENGE THIS YEAR.
Shirley and Terry Palliser
