Bathing the Roman Way On 19 January Year 8 girls visited Bath to discover more about the way in which Romans bathed and the ancient town of Aquae Sulis.
On arrival there was a talk and powerpoint display about the artefacts that have been found in the baths complex. This was particularly illuminating as the girls had the chance to use their knowledge of Latin and word derivations in helping to decipher the inscriptions. We then had the chance to handle some artefacts and assess what materials they were made from and how they would have been used.
The highlight of the day was when we explored the baths and the surrounding area. The girls were able to listen to an audio guide to enhance their learning whilst completing worksheets, and had the opportunity to see not only the different temperature baths, but the bubbling sacred spring, temple remains, mosaics, tombstones, statues, drains, and of course the shop at the end of the tour, where perhaps unsurprisingly, the sales of chocolate surpassed those of guide books considerably.
My thanks to Mrs Mackenzie and Mrs Stevenson for their hard work on the day, and of course to the girls themselves for their enthusiasm and interest.
