Trip to Reading Museum

Year 4 girls see a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry and enjoy related activities.

Saskia Beasley in L2MJ writes:

On Thursday 15 March we went to Reading Museum to see a complete replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. It took an hour and a half to get there, but it was definitely worth it!

There were several different activities to enjoy in the museum. One of these was acting tableaux. There were lots of costumes to wear and the main characters were King Harold, Edward the Confessor, Stigand and Queen Edith. There were two scenes: one showing the death of Edward, the Confessor, with Edith crying, and the other one was Harold’s crowning.

Then there was a Bayeux Tapestry quiz. Luckily for us there was an exquisite copy of the tapestry made by a group of Victorian ladies and we found only two differences: the ladies had embroidered their names across the bottom and on the original there was a naked man. The Victorian ladies thought this rude and so they covered him up with underpants!

Next was the jigsaw, which was very tricky, but we just about managed it. It was then time to explore some tiles from Henry VII’s age. The patterns were all different and I specially liked the tiles with the swirly patterns. Finally we tried on head dresses of chain mail. I found this very heavy and could certainly not run around in that all day!

The grand finale was a visit to the museum shop. There were lots of beautiful things to buy and then it was back to school. I hope to visit the museum again soon.
