Year 10 visit to France

At the end of March, thirty-five Year 10 girls accompanied by Mrs Baker, Ms Fretwell, Mrs Robbins and our always smiling assistante Elise Pereira-Nunes spent a working week in northern France, on the Opal Coast, undertaking a combination of language exercises, excursions and leisure activities designed to improve their knowledge of French, boost their confidence in speaking the language and offer them an experience of the culture.

The first outing was an exploration of Montreuil-sur-Mer, following clues to find various buildings and sights in the market town. Despite some truly appalling weather, including driving rain which soon turned into enormous snowflakes, the students remained remarkably cheerful and were rewarded by a visit to a traditional chocolaterie in the afternoon, an informative talk and demonstration followed by tasting.

We continued to combine language work with excursions throughout the week,  visiting Etaples and Boulogne, where we interviewed the residents, and saw bread and croissants being made in wood-burning ovens. We even attempted some dough work ourselves.

The huge and impressive aquarium in Boulogne was a highlight, especially for those who saw the penguins. In the evenings, students prepared language work, went bowling in Boulogne, and participated in presentations and a last-night quiz. Even the vegetarians could appreciate French cuisine, as the staff at the hotel made every effort to provide appetising food.

The trip was a great success; many students noticed an improvement in their understanding and use of French and they enjoyed themselves as well.
