                                      Visiting the library

As part of their topic ‘Helping Hands’ the Reception Class visited Leamington Spa Library.  We were shown around by a very kind librarian called Debbie, who explained how she helps to look after the books in the library.  She gave us a little quiz to begin with, asking us to name some book characters.  After that Debbie read us the story of ‘The Blue Balloon’ by Mick Inkpen.  Then each of the children were given a little story book which they were asked to illustrate.

Next we visited the help desk, so that we knew where to find it should we have a problem finding a book in the future.  Finally Debbie allowed us to scan the barcode and stamp the date in the books which we borrowed.

We had a very nice time and made a super Kipper thank you card to send to Debbie.  Back in our classroom we have made our own role play library, where we pretend to be helpful librarians.

Reception children celebrated National Bird Week by learning to recognise some well known garden birds, including robins, blue tits, blackbirds, chaffinches and wrens.  They made lovely little finger puppets to wiggle as we learnt the traditional rhyme about ‘Two Little Dickie Birds’.  They also pretended to be birds foraging for food using a variety of different pretend beaks, a sharp pointy beak, a spoon-like beak, a sticky beak, a peg beak and a finger beak.  The children began to understand that different birds need different types of beaks, depending on which foods they like to eat.  We also made collage parrots, using feathers, felt and paper.  Thanks to Mrs Carole Watson, we also met Oliver the feathery owl and each made a dough Oliver of our own, which we then painted.  When Jas from the Courier came to take our photograph, we went out in the garden to do some bird spotting.

                                 Using playdough

The Reception children all made their own names out of playdough.
