Kingsley Public Speaking Three Kingsley teams have successfully competed in the Rotary Club’s ‘Youthspeaks’ competition in Warwick recently. Two senior and one intermediate team competed against Warwick School and King’s High in this local round, with our intermediate team going on to the district final at the Arden School, Knowle. There Charlotte, Lily and Alice spoke superbly on their topic of ‘fairy tales’, a well-considered and witty exploration of contemporary attitudes to censorship.
When it came to the senior competition, we were delighted that our Year 11 team of Emily, Nadine and Christina won with their impassioned critique of new vocational qualifications entitled ‘McA-Levels – the way forward?’ and then went on to give a good account of themselves at Knowle. Equally pleasing was the placing of our Year 10 team as runners up, as the youngest team in the competition. Their speech was a celebration of the recorder as a serious musical instrument – an interesting and well-delivered performance by Anna, Lucinda and Alice. We hope they will continue to compete in future years after this promising beginning! Our oldest team, consisting of sixth formers Katie, Laura and Grace, spoke about ‘The Human Form - Divine?’ and they impressed the judges with their treatment of a serious topic: our obsession with body image.
Many congratulations to all our accomplished speakers who were a credit to the school with their polished presentations. It is to be hoped that they will continue to compete in this entertaining and confidence-building activity in which the school has a growing local reputation. SG Crump |
