Sailing Success
Many congratulations to Jean Furness, 16, who has been selected to join the national youth squad of the Royal Yachting Association.

RYA Youth Championships at Pwllheli, April 2008.
RYA Youth Championships at Pwllheli, April 2008.

Jean has been sailing for many years and over the last two years has competed in competitions all over the country. Having graduated last autumn from the small boat she raced with her sister Joan to a much faster and larger boat, Jean was invited last October to take part in RYA training weekends.

At Easter the RYA held the National Youth Championships in Wales; Jean and her crew Kathryn came twelfth out of forty entries, a great achievement, especially since Jean was the youngest girl helm. The RYA was so impressed by the girls' performance that they have been invited to join the National Youth Squad, which consists of five teams of boys and five of girls.

Jean will be competing later on this year in the national championships at Weymouth and the European Championships in Holland. Well done, Jean, and good luck!
