Psychedelic Physics

Girls involved in Mrs Hermitage's lunchtime science club recently enjoyed making lava lamps, using vegetable oil, coloured water, glitter and Alka-Seltzer tablets. The tablets react with water droplets to create carbon dioxide, which attaches to the water molecules, making them lighter, so they rise. Then the carbon dioxide bubbles burst and the water droplets sink down again. This simulates the effects of an electric lava lamp and demonstrates convection currents formed by hot air or hot liquids, which rise and fall.
