Summer Visit to Iceland On 14 July 2008 a large group of Kingsley students set off for an action-packed five day geographical tour of Iceland, organised and led by the indefatigable Mrs Jo Bailey.
Year 10 girls Laura Barlow, Hannah Maycock and Harriet Field describe their experiences: After a three hour flight from London Heathrow we landed in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Having quickly checked into our hotel we headed off for a guided tour of the capital, followed by a delicious meal in a local restaurant.
Our second day began early with a tour of a power station, where we learned all about clean geothermal energy: we discovered to our surprise that during winter, the streets and pavements in Iceland have underfloor heating! We then went to Gullfoss, a huge, fast-flowing river with breathtaking waterfalls - the spray was so intense it felt like it was raining.
Our third day began with a bus trip to Thorsmörk Valley to admire the glaciers. However, on the way our bus got stuck in a shallow stream, much to everyone’s amusement. We quickly evacuated the bus, which was towed away forty minutes later.
The fourth day was the highlight for many of us, when we embarked on a whale watching trip. We were lucky enough to see seven minke and two humpback whales. One of the humpback whales swam under the boat about a metre away from us.
In the evening we visited an outdoor swimming pool, where we loved trying out all the hot tubs!
The final day arrived far too quickly. On the way to the airport we visited The Blue Lagoon, an outdoor spa famous for its therapeutic benefits. After the application of face packs and an hour of floating and gentle swimming, we were relaxed yet feeling energised.
Iceland was a fantastic experience that we will never forget and we should like to thank all the teachers who gave up holiday time to accompany us. It has been the highlight of our lives so far!
