Challenge and Team Building Day

Students in Years 11 and 12  were given the opportunity to take part in a challenge/ team building day on 9 September. On a very wet and grey day, over fifty girls travelled to Adventure Sports in Warwick, where they were divided into seven teams and given their first challenge.

The tasks involved both physical and mental activities and saw the girls working at making go-carts, thinking about pulley systems in order to move a ‘bomb’, guiding a blind-folded colleague to collect ‘food’, as well as devising a seesaw / swing type construction to bridge a fenced area. The challenges were thought-provoking and raised a great deal of discussion between team members. As the day wore on, the girls’ listening skills and teamwork improved tremendously; several of the instructors commented that the mature way in which the teams approached the tasks was better than that of many adult groups.

The day finished with the Race. Ah! This was the point of making go-carts. Unfortunately the carts weren’t equipped with an engine, so the teams had to provide the power for the carts themselves. This required muscle power, light drivers and maximum speed! The rules of the race were simple: one member of the team pushed the cart and its driver as far as a marker, and then handed over to another member of the team for the return straight. Everyone was determined to win and it was amazing to watch the carts speeding over the grass, with spray flying up at the navigators and everyone loudly urging their team to success. Dream Team, with its navigator Jodie, won the race and was declared overall winner for the day.

It was an excellent day which tested everyone’s ability both in problem solving and in determination to withstand the elements. I have rarely seen so much mud - some girls in particular seemed to attract it!
