Year 10 and 11 Kingsley students visiting the National Space Centre in Leicester yesterday were surprised to find themselves being interviewed by BBC TV!

TV and newspaper journalists had turned out in strength to report on the opening of the UK's first space academy, which has been set up with a £900,000 grant from the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA). The academy aims to inspire thousands of young people to think about space as a career by providing a variety of projects for 9 to 19 year olds.

Kingsley science teachers regularly organise trips to The National Space Centre, which has pioneered the exploration of space in science education since it opened in 2001, and astronomy GCSE is becoming increasingly popular with our students.

Year 11 pupil Emily Castle, who will be taking GCSE Astronomy next summer, said: "I love going to the Space Centre and I found today's workshop really helpful in understanding the making of comets and the paths they take.  The Mars mission was great - we had fun doing school work without even realising it! Given the chance I would definitely go again."
